Birth Control Rings:
Rings are essentially birth control pills in a different form.
The birth control ring is a type of hormonal contraception. It's
a soft, flexible transparent ring that measures about 2 inches
in diameter and is less than a quarter of an inch thick. (The
ring does not contain latex.)You insert the ring into your vagina at the beginning of your cycle and leave it there for three weeks. Once inside, the ring releases a continuous low dose of synthetic estrogen and progesterone (progestin). These are the same two hormones you'd get from taking a birth control pill.
After three weeks, you take the ring out and leave it out for exactly one week, during which time you'll get your period. When you've completed the 28-day cycle (21 consecutive days with the ring in, followed by seven days without it), you insert a new ring the next day.
Different Birth Control Rings
NuvaRing®
is a different kind of birth control. The comfortable, flexible
contraceptive ring that is about two inches in diameter is used
to prevent pregnancy. You insert NuvaRing® into your vagina just
once a month. The muscles in your vaginal wall will keep
NuvaRing® in place for three weeks. During that time, it will
slowly release a low dose of hormones that are needed to prevent
pregnancy. When 21 days are completed, simply remove NuvaRing® to allow your body to have its menstrual cycle. After a seven-day break, you will insert a new ring to continue to be protected against pregnancy.

The details
NuvaRing is a ‘combined’ contraceptive, containing the hormones estrogen (ethinylestradiol) and progestogen (etonogestrel), which are homogeneously dispersed throughout the ring’s core. The hormones are absorbed directly through the vaginal lining directly into the blood stream. After insertion, NuvaRing releases both estrogen and progestogen and works in the same way as combined oral contraceptives by inhibiting ovulation. Cycle control Cycle control provided by NuvaRing is such that irregular breakthrough bleeding is rare, and nearly all women experience a withdrawal bleed in the ring-free week.
